Random Ode to Music Videos
Well, not so random…this was prompted by note by a friend on IG which stated “I used to watch so many music videos” (@freebrownfee). So anyways, here goes…
The good days…I’m feeling called to revitalize that era within myself somehow. The storytelling, the romance, the afrofuturism on full display, the parties, the dance battles, the campiness all of it! I rarely engage the music videos of songs I actually really like anymore and it used to be my favorite way to enjoy music. Music videos put so many of my favorite creative mediums in one space. I want to pay homage to the parts of me that music videos raised. They made me brave. They made me yearn for love I hadn’t even experienced yet. They made me believe in better days ahead. Made me feel superhuman. Feminine. Beautiful. Like I possessed a talent that just needed to get on the right stage. Like my pop star dreams weren’t so far away—they were right in front of me. I really miss the days when I cared about music video releases. Seeing who the it boy or girl would be. What new choreography we weee going to get. I want to tap back into that Jazi. That felt equally as creative and capable of movement and moving people. I’m trying to run that feeling back.
